2004 Olympian and national high school record holder Alan Webb and U.S. men's pole vault record holder Jeff Hartwig each shattered long-standing meet records Saturday at the 98th Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. A sellout crowd of 14,000 people was on hand for the final day of the event, extending Drake's string of Saturday sellouts to 42 consecutive years.

Webb broke National Track & Field Hall of Famer Steve Scott's Drake Relays mile record with his time of 3 minutes, 51.71 seconds, which bettered Scott's previous standard by more than three seconds, and ranks as the fastest time in the world this year. Webb held a 10-second lead late in the race and the crowd stood and gave him a rousing ovation the rest of the way.

"I've never run this fast this early," Webb told The Associated Press. "Sometimes it's taken me a while to get going in my season, so this is a really good sign that I'm running this fast this early."

Jeff Hartwig, who won seven straight Drake men's pole vault titles from 1995-2001, at age 39 cleared 5.81 meters/19 feet, 0.75 inches to better the previous meet record he set in 1998. Elsewhere in field event action, reigning U.S. Indoor champion and 2004 World Indoor men's shot put gold medalist Christian Cantwell won his fifth Drake Relays title in the last six years with his winning throw of 21.72 meters/71 feet 3.75 inches, which is the second best performance in the world this outdoor season.

In the women's 100m hurdles, Des Moines native and Drake Relays record holder Lolo Jones ran a wind-aided time of 12.77 seconds for the win. Canada's Angela Whyte finished as the runner-up, a tenth of a second behind Jones.
