The first day of the Pan American Junior Championships concluded Friday in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Team USA claiming seven individual champions and sweeping the top two places in three separate events.

Scott Roth (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Jordan Scott (Watkinsville, Ga.) finished first and second, respectively, in the men's pole vault. Roth cleared 5.30m/17-4.50 while Scott cleared 5.10m/168.75.

Kristi Castlin (Douglasville, Ga.) and Queen Harrison (Fallsburg, N.Y.) finished first and second in the 100m hurdles. Castlin won in a time of 13.02 seconds and Harrison's second-place time of 13.20 was over a half-second ahead of third place.

Emily Pendleton (Elmore, Ohio) won the women's discus with a throw of 49.09m/161-0 and Samantha Musil (DuBois, Neb.) was second with a throw of 46.50m/152-7.

Also for Team USA, Johnny Dutch (Clayton, N.C.) won the 110m hurdles in 13.46 seconds, Nicole Blood (Gansevoort, N.J.) won the women's 3,000m run in a time of 9:22.35, Nicholas Robinson (Lake Forest, Calif.) won the men's shot put with a throw of 18.60m/61-0.25 and Lynne Lane (New Rochelle, N.Y.) won the women's 100m in a time of 11.53.
